First Covid-19, now monkeypox! The world just can’t seem to get a break from infectious diseases. But just like Covid-19, it is best we arm ourselves with knowledge about the disease so we know what we’re up against. Here are 5 things you need to know about monkeypox:

1. Monkeypox is not spread by monkeys
The main disease carrier is actually thought to be rodents. However, it is possible to catch the monkeypox virus from touching any infected animal (this includes monkeys) or eating meat from an infected animal.

2. You can catch monkeypox from an infected friend.
This disease spreads from human to human by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as clothing and bed sheets. People may be contagious at the first signs of a fever and stay infectious until their rash heals over.

3. Monkeypox symptoms are less contagious and less severe than smallpox
Just like smallpox, those infected with monkeypox usually start with symptoms such as fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches and fatigue, followed by widespread rashes/lesions which usually begins on the face. The symptom that sets these 2 diseases apart is swollen lymph nodes which is only present in monkeypox.

4. Most monkeypox patients recover in 2 to 4 weeks
If you do get monkeypox, don’t worry. The disease is usually mild and the symptoms are self-limiting. Nevertheless, since monkeypox can spread if there is close contact, you will need to isolate if diagnosed with it.

5. Monkeypox is preventable
Always practice good hand hygiene and only eat meat that is well-cooked. It is also best to stay away from wild or stray animals and animals that appear unwell. Lastly, avoid sharing personal items with those who are unwell and avoid contact altogether with those who may have monkeypox.
